Since
2008 the ELOC Website has operated from a dedicated server. (As more records
were added, the previous server became increasingly unable to cope, leading to frustrating
delays and time-outs). Any visitor to the site can make use of the following facilities:
Bird Records - can all be seen by scrolling down the page; no need
to open individual forum entries and no restriction on the dates you can look at.
Records - can be sorted by species, location, date and observer, enabling
searches to be made by any of these criteria.
Summary Charts and Graphs - of individual species can be displayed,
by date or location.
Gazetteer - including every site ever recorded, all with Grid
Reference and link to Ordnance Survey's Get-a-Map.
Photo Gallery.
Forum - there are separate sub-forums for birding matters other
than records and for records of other animal and plant groups. To submit items to the website, gallery or forums, it is first necessary
to register. Because of the way the site is set up, a separate registration is
required for the website and for the forum; however, registration for both is
free.Additional facilities available only to those who have registered are:
Submit bird records* via the on-line database.
The database will store all the records you submit and these can be
downloaded by you at any time as an Excel spreadsheet.
Opt to be sent an email every time a rare bird is recorded.
Post photographs* to the gallery.
Opt to be sent an email every time a new photograph is submitted.
Post or reply to items in the forums.
Request additional sites to be added to the gazetteer.
* Records and photographs should be of birds in 'Greater' East
Lancashire only please, i.e. all parts of Lancashire east of the Bowland watershed
and, from south of the River Brock, east of the M6 and M61. (We also accept records
from just over the county boundary into North and West Yorkshire)
As far as we know, no other bird club website offers this range of facilities. However, the dedicated
server that makes this possible is costing the club over 350 pounds a year,
a significant sum for a club with a membership of less than 30 (work it out!).
We are therefore suggesting that those non-members who make use of the site should make
a voluntary annual donation of not less than 5 pounds. Regular visitors may wish to
consider donating more than the minimum. Cheques should be made payable to ELOC and
posted to the Treasurer, Peter Baldwin, 9 Willaston Ave., Blacko, NELSON, BB9 6LU.
Please include your email address, to enable your donation to be acknowledged at no
further cost to the club. Without this additional revenue there is a very real danger
that the ELOC website may have to close.
Thank
you
