Recording Area
The area consists of the whole of the Burnley, Hyndburn, Pendle and Ribble Valley Districts and most of Blackburn with Darwen, but not the southern portion that lies in the Irwell catchment. Perhaps the simplest guide to the club's recording area is that the district boundaries around its perimeter mainly follow watersheds. Going clockwise; in the north-east the boundary cuts across the Ribble catchment following the Lancashire - North Yorkshire county boundary; in the east the boundary lies between the catchment of the Calder and the catchments of the Aire and Yorkshire Calder; in the south it lies between the Calder and Irwell and then the Darwen and Irwell catchments; in the south-west it runs down the River Roddlesworth and a small length of the Darwen before once again cutting across the Ribble catchment; in the west it lies between the Loud and Brock catchments; in the north-west and north it lies between the Hodder catchment and the Bleasdale Calder, Wyre and Lune catchments. The recording area thus includes the Ribble catchment from Alston and Balderstone in the south to Nappa (between Paythorne and Hellifield) in the north, the whole of the Calder and Hodder catchments and all except the lower end of the Darwen catchment.
From 2007, following the closure of the East Lancashire Birding Website and its sightings
forum, the club's on-line database also receives and holds sightings from Rossendale,
the remainder of Blackburn with Darwen, those parts of the Preston and South Ribble
Districts that lie east of the M6 and those parts of the Chorley District that lie
east of the M61. In other words, records are held for the whole of 'Greater' East
Lancashire - all parts of the county south of the River Brock and east of the M6 and
M61. Any records received from these additional areas will be passed to the appropriate
recorders.
Virtually all of the recording area can be found on Ordnance Survey Landranger Map
103 (Blackburn and Burnley), as can most of Rossendale. Other maps needed are:-
Sheet 98 (Wensleydale and Upper Wharfedale) - northern edge of the Ribble Valley District.
Sheet 102 (Preston and Blackpool) - western portion of the Ribble Valley District and eastern portions of the Preston and South Ribble Districts.
Sheet 109 (Manchester) - southern portions of Blackburn with Darwen and Rossendale Districts and eastern portion of the Chorley District.
