2007 Little Ringed and Ringed Plover Survey

The BTO is organising a national survey of Ringed Plover and Little Ringed Plover during the 2007 breeding season. These species were last surveyed in 1984; based on that survey a preliminary list of tetrads containing likely sites has been identified for the East Lancashire region.

A tetrad is a 2km x 2km square and may be identified in two ways:-

a) by the 10km square in which it lies and a letter, e.g. the tetrad containing the Foulridge Reservoirs is SD84V,
b) by the grid reference for the SW (bottom left hand) corner of the tetrad, e.g. the SW corner of the Foulridge   tetrad is at grid ref SD8840.

Sites within tetrads identified as likely to contain Little Ringed and Ringed Plovers are:-

SD62M        SD6242         Stocks Clough Quarry
SD62X  SD6824 Fishmoor Reservoir 1
SD62Y SD6826 Fishmoor Reservoir 2
SD72D  SD7026  Duckworth Hall 1
SD72E SD7028 Whitebirk Power Station
SD72I  SD7226 Duckworth Hall 2
SD74T  SD7646 River Ribble North of Sawley 1
SD74Y  SD7846 River Ribble North of Sawley 2
SD75C    SD7054 Stocks Reservoir 1
SD75H  SD7254 Stocks Reservoir 2
SD75I  SD7256 Stocks Reservoir 3
SD83L SD8432  Michelin Site
SD83M SD8434  Lucas Site

1.    Are there tetrads that can be excluded from the list, because they do not now hold breeding plovers?  e.g. Whitebirk Power Station no longer exists, but is any part of the tetrad still suitable?
2. Are there additional sites in the region that have recently held breeding plovers and therefore need to be included in the list of key sites?  e.g. there have been sightings from the Foulridge Reservoirs in recent years.
3. Would anybody reading this be willing to take part in the survey? It will involve two or three visits between April and July 2007. Forms and site maps will be provided.

I should be very grateful for any relevant information, preferably before mid-November. Please e-mail to the address below
